Tenth to Quarter

Decided I might as well align more with Untappd’s scoring system and will now use quarter points instead of tenths.

Rating -> Ticking

Decided mid-drinking that if I was going to use Untappd, there would be no need for rating any longer, so no more notes related to Appearance, Aroma and Taste from now on.

Ratebeer Shutdown

On 18/12-2024 it was announced that RateBeer would be shutting down their website on 1/2-2025. Having rated beers there for over 16 years (since June 2008), this was difficult news from a beer rating perspective. Whereas I quite quickly migrated my ratings to brewver.com, I eventually decided to start using Untappd.

Between 12/5-2025 and 24/6-2025, today, I manually uploaded 4725 ratings. This was a quite nice journey down memory lane, experiencing again the beer hunts, beer events and private events since I rated my first beer almost 20 years ago (13/8-2025).

With RateBeer closed I have started rating much less, but still find enjoyment trying new beers, especially when travelling. But I think the hunt for new countries, new regions and new styles is over. Also mo more Beer Goals.

Maybe a positive will be that I will be drinking beers I enjoy more. Let’s see how it goes.

Beer Goals 2024 - Result

My beer goals for 2024 were as follows (with inline comments):

• ✅  Did well, managed to get 6 new styles to 10.

• ✅ Did much better than expected, reached 1756 breweries. Tried 115 new breweries this year, compared to 127 last year. Helped by our summer road trip.

• Reached the goal, but with just a small margin. Tried 72 new ones (compared to 93 last year) and ended on 1514 breweries.

• Reached again via an online order, hopefully it lasts this time around!
• Rate a top-50 beer from five of the last 12 styles   [Current status: 9 left]

• Due to the addition of lots of  new RB styles, these all became impossible and I am now missing a lot of styles again.

• Technically I didn't reach this goal as I am just on 1349. But I tried a new meadery, so I think I basically reached this goal anyway, on the last day of the year. 113 new breweries is less than last year, and I think next year will be even more difficult.

• Ended the year on 521 Swiss ratings.

• Helped by trades, but didn't quite reach the goal with three more needed. Climbed from 16th place to 14th place, though.
• Get from 6 to 8 Canadian Provinces   [Current status: 7]
• Given up on the trade now, but managed to randomly find one new one at least.
• Get last England County (Hertfordshire) again   [Goal achieved 2018-05-18]
• Managed to get hold of it via a trade, but lost another County during the year, so will be a goal again next year.
• Rate a top-50 beer from six of the last 11 styles   [Current status: 12!]
• This is a difficult one, will be even harder next year.

• Managed this one easily early in the year.

Beer Goals 2017 - Result

My beer goals for 2017 were as follows (with inline comments):

• Get from 153 to 164 Ratebeer countries   [Goal reached 2017-10-22]
• Helped by trades as usual, I managed to get to 167 countries with one in the basement. Still not in the top-10 though, but in 16th place.
• Get from 6 to 8 Canadian Provinces
• Trade still not completed, hopefully will manage next year...
• Get a top-50 beer rating from the last eight styles   [Current status: 11]
• Went from eight to eleven as some dropped out or had the style changed. This one is more difficult than I thought...
• Reduce styles I have tried less than 5 beers from 5 to 0   [Current status: 2]
• Did pretty well, but still two left (Unblended and Faro) at four.
• Reduce styles I have tried less than 10 beers from 10 to 5   [Goal reached 2017-09-29]
• Managed to reach this goal, and got down to four. Happy with that.
• Get from 664 to 1000 RB posts   [Goal reached 2017-04-13]
• Managed to get to 1364 before they switched to the new forums. On the new forums I reached 134 replies and 4 topics created, so pretty active year.
• Get from 905 to 1000 breweries   [Goal reached 2017-07-14]
• Crushed this one and ended up with 1084 breweries.
• Get from 288 to 320 Swiss ratings   [Goal reached 2017-07-21]
• This one ended up being quite easy, and ended up with 345 Swiss ratings
• Get from 78 to 100 Swiss breweries   [Goal reached 2017-07-22]
• Took a bit of a hunt, but ended up with 109 Swiss breweries.

Some other minor country related goals:

• Increase countries with 50+ ratings from 9 to 10   [Goal reached 2017-03-24]
• Increase countries with 10+ ratings from 23 to 30   [Current status: 28]
• Increase countries with 5+ ratings from 34 to 40   [Current status: 39]
• Increase countries with 2+ ratings from 79 to 85   [Goal reached 2017-06-23]

The two X-or-less goals were not helped by the introduction of a new style, India Style Lager, in April 2017. I had only tried three of this new style, so had to get seven more of those as well.

I also managed two of the four "minor country related goals". It could have been three as I had enough Northern Ireland beers to get up to five, but then I got sick over Christmas. I am especially happy with getting 2+ countries from 79 to 90
