Chimay Spéciale Poteaupré [Dorée]

On tap at Auberge de Poteaupré near the Abbey.

• Name: Chimay Spéciale Poteaupré [Dorée], 4.5%, Belgium
• Appearance: Brownish orange, cloudy. Nice, white head.
  
• Aroma: Fruit, citrus. Some hops.
  
• Taste: Mild, nice fruit. Hops and light bitterness.

Chimay Blue comparison

I tried both "Blue" versions at the same time to see if there was any noticeable difference between them. Unfortunately, the Grande Reserve seemed to have gone slightly off due to having been stored at home for nine months. One difference, though, was that the smaller Bleue seemed to be smoother, and the larger Grande Reserve had more head.


It is quite strong, so you'll definitely feel the effects of over a liter of 9% beer :-).

Chimay Triple / Blanche / Cinq Cents

330ml version, Chimay Triple / Blanche:

• Name: Chimay Triple / Blanche, 8%, Belgium
  
• Appearance: Golden, nice amount of head - not longlasting. Last bit a bit cloudy.
  
• Aroma: Bit of fruit. Citrusy.
  
• Taste: Hopsy, bit of fruit. Bitterish.

• Name: Chimay Cinq Cents, 8%, Belgium
  
• Appearance: Hazy golden. Good amount of off-white head. Sediments and floaty bits.
  
• Aroma: Fruit and citrus. Wood. Fresh.
  
• Taste: Hops and citrus. Nice aftertaste.
  
• Bought: Beers of Europe, 750 ml, £4.55
  
• Overall score: 4/6*

The 500-book includes the Chimay Grande Reserve instead of the above Chimay Bleue so I decided to try it separately even though they are supposed to be the same:

• Aroma: Vinous, dark fruit. Yeast, acidic?
  
• Taste: Malt and dark fruit. Vinous. Complex. Bit of cork (stored nine months at home).
